Weight Loss Surgery Help

Advice for Partners of Bandsters

How Can I Help My Mate
Following Lap Band Surgery?

  • Listen more than talk

  • Listen more than trying to fix or offer solutions

  • Try to eat a healthier diet yourself

  • Be more active with your significant other
    • walk together
    • park farther from the entrance
    • walk the mall during bad weather
    • join a gym together, exercise at home together
    • ride bikes together
    • go for walks in the parks together
    • swim together
    • take the stairs together
    • walk the “long way around” together
encourage any physical activity you can do together

  • Learn about the post surgery diet and lifestyle changes
Learn this on your own without relying solely on your mate to spoon feed you all the information. Your mate will appreciate your effort

  • Be patient during the difficult periods

  • Encourage all signs of positive change

  • Help your mate find new ways to reward herself/himself other than with food

  • Don’t you fall into the old trap of suggesting going out to dinner as a reward

  • Be by your mate’s side as she/he has to attend holiday & family functions where there may be a lot of tempting food

  • Don’t forget to remind your mate of the positive changes you notice in their appearance, mobility, mood, etc.

  • Be more sexual with your mate

  • Encourage your mate to follow through with all after care instructions and appointments

  • Take better care of yourself so your health will be one less concern as your mate makes the journey of weight loss following surgery

  • Did I mention to be patient, encouraging, and caring?
