Tips on Eating Following Weight Loss Surgery:

Good Morning Everyone,

It has been a couple of days since I last posted. Fortunately, I have been busy with office and phone sessions.

As many of you know changing your relationship with food after being banded is a major part of the "journey" to a thinner you.

Food can no longer be viewed as much as a source of pleasure of socialization, but in the more pure sense of simply fuel and nourishment for your body. Bandsters also realize in quick order that the "Band" can be very unforgiving if you eat too much or too quickly.

Today, you are going to get some tips that will hopefully help in your post-band journey.

Eating has to become a more pure experience following the banding procedure. By pure experience I mean that eating has to be about eating and little else. Even the act of eating needs to be kept as simple and pure as possible.

For example, you may notice that eating and socializing  at the same time can easily lead to overeating resulting in discomfort (the band telling you who is now in control).

So here are a few tips to help you work with the band and avoid discomfort...

  1. When possible eat in a place that is free of distractions.
  2. Try not to socialize when you are eating.
  3. Do not watch TV or sit in front of a computer monitor when eating.
  4. Put your spoon/fork down between bites.
  5. Eat from your eyebrows up - meaning eat with your head and not with your stomach or heart. Think about food choices and the process of eating.
  6. Try not to eat if you are upset.
  7. Take a break from your worries/stressors when eating.
  8. If it helps play relaxing music while you eat.
  9. Chew each bite 20 times - just like Grandma said.
  10. Think of your food as simply fuel and nourishment - nothing more, nothing less.

Well, I hope these 10 tips are helpful. Keep in mind that eating only takes a few minutes and then you can get on with your life. Constantly seek out new ways to enjoy life and find meaning in life. There are many ways to enjoy the world and the people around us. I am sure each and every one of you will find that replacing food as a source of enjoyment will not only help work with your Band, but also enrich your lives.
